Over the years, many people have asked us questions by post, email and phone. Answers to the most frequently asked questions are provided here. If your question is not included, please contact us using the accompanying contact form.


Can I bring my bag into the museum?

You are permitted to bring your bags into the museum which are smaller than A4 format. You cannot bring larger bags into the museum, out of consideration for the safety of our objects. There are lockers available in the cloak room to store your bag.


When is the Tropenmuseum open?

The Tropenmuseum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. It is also open on Mondays on public and school holidays from 10 am to 5 pm. On public holidays different hours apply.

Is it possible to park close by?

Paid parking places are available in the vicinity of the museum. However, these are limited in number, so we advise visitors to use public transport.

Can I take photos at the Tropenmuseum?

Photography is permitted at the Tropenmuseum, including flash photography. Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed. Press or other professional photographers, wishing to use a tripod, can apply for permission by emailing to info@tropenmuseum.nl.


Is the Tropenmuseum accessible to wheelchair and mobility scooter users?

The Tropenmuseum is accessible to wheelchair users: there are no thresholds and an elevator gives access to all floors. The museum has several unmechanised wheelchairs for visitors. Mobility scooters are not permitted in the museum.


May I bring my dog to the Tropenmuseum?

Dogs or other pets are not permitted in the museum, except assistance dogs and guide dogs for the blind.


Does the museum offer guided tours?

Guided tours are regularly provided on Sundays. To book a tour for a group or to organise a group visit to the Tropenmuseum: see the Groups and Tours section.


Is an audiotour available?

The audiotours of the Tropenmuseum guide you through the highlights of the permanent exhibitions or through the temporary exhibitions. The tours are available in Dutch, English, German and French. An audiotour is available at the museum cash desk.


Why can't I view the video that I recorded in the exhibition World of Music?

The videos from the exhibition World of Music are Flash movies. Unfortunately, Adobe Flash is not automatically supported on, for example, Apple products (iPod, iPhone). You must first download the Flash Player itself via: http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer.


How do I receive press releases?

Press releases and visual material are available on the Press page. For other questions relating to press coverage please contact the museum via info@tropenmuseum.nl.


Can I see Tropenmuseum exhibits online?

The Tropenmuseum offers an online database of objects and photos. Information about exhibitions, literature and events relating to the Tropenmuseum is also available.


Are there jobs or internships available at the Tropenmuseum, where do I find vacancies?

Tropenmuseum vacancies are advertised on the Job vacancies page.


How do I stay informed about Tropenmuseum events?

All our activities are announced in our Calendar.


Where can I find more information about holding a wedding at the Tropenmuseum?

It is possible to hold a wedding in one of the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) rooms. We also have venues for receptions and dinner. Weddings can be held at the Museum restaurant or at NH Tropenhotel.

What are the benefits of being a 'Friend of the Tropenmuseum'?

As a friend of the Tropenmuseum, you are invited to openings and special Friends Events. Your Friend membership card gives you free access to the Tropenmuseum, Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden and the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal.

I would like to sell or donate an object or picture to the museum, how do I do this?

You can mail the information including a picture about the object that you want to sell or donate to info @tropenmuseum.nl.


I own an exclusive object. Can the Tropenmuseum appraise it?

The Tropenmuseum does not appraise objects.


Can I get vaccinations, medication and/or medical advice about tropical countries at the Tropenmuseum?

The Tropenmuseum provides no vaccinations nor medical advice about vaccinations. Contact one of the following organisations:


What are the terms and conditions for ordering images from the Collection database?

  • The images will be delivered as TIFF files, maximum 4288x2848 pixels. This will result in 35 MB (RBG) or 11.6 Mb (grayscale). With 300 dpi the dimensions are 36 x 24 cm (14 3/16 x 9 7/16in.)
  • Through payment, the applicant agrees with the delivery conditions.
  • Images will be delivered within two weeks after reception of payment.
  • For publication of an image, permission of the Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen is needed. Depending on the number of copies and the size of the image, costs for onetime- only user rights will be determined. The provider will receive a copy of the publication. In case of reprint, permission is again required, at the then current user rate.
  • In publication, the following reference must be used: "Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen. Object number ..."

Does the Tropenmuseum do genealogical research?
