Southeast Asia

Sculptures from Borobudur, finely crafted golden jewellery, and an amazing collection of Indo-Javanese bronze. The Tropenmuseum collection contains some superb items from Southeast Asia.

TIP: Four symbols recur in many Southeast Asian cultures: the lotus, the dragon/serpent, a man sitting on his haunches, and the bird. Can you find each of these in the exhibition?

Southeast Asia incorporates the countries Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines. It is a region with an extraordinary cultural dynamic in which rich and diverse cultures have influenced eachother for centuries. The result of this mutual influence is apparent in this presentation of unique objects with a common history.
